Cassettes: A Church Hall Of Sound
Buoyed up by how well What's So Bad About Being A Grown-Up had gone I returned to the attic later in 1997 for what's probably my favourite of all these tapes, "A Church Hall Of Sound". This one featured "The Peterborough All Saints Wide Game Team (group B)", "Before I Was Cool", "Family Wedding 2021" and "Another Man's Laundry (hanging on your line)", all of which got re-recorded a couple of years later for the A Church Hall Of Sound (revisited) EP which was then collected onto Warriors of Nanpantan. It's also got the original version of "If You Need Loving", a cover of "Geneve" by John Otway, my favourite ever not-properly-released song (of mine anyway) "Down The Narborough Road" and songs like "That's A Bonus" and "We Must Go Into Europe" that were big earners in my live set for quite a long time. It felt like a big step forward for me - all the songs turned out how I hoped , none were stupid for the sake of stupidity but none were po-faced and dull either, and it still sounds rather nice to me even now.
