Songs: Save The Red Squirrel

notes / gigs / releases

Save the Red Sqirrel
The Red Squirrel's under threat
Help save the squirrel who is red
We should look after him because he's
Our indigenous species
Help save the squirrel who is red

His habitat's been taken
By a grey squirrel invasion
He's been pushed to the edges of the land
His tufted little ears
Will one day soon disappear
If we don't act to protect him where we can

So Save the Red Sqirrel
The Red Squirrel's under threat
Help save the squirrel who is red
We should look after him because he's
Our indigenous species
Help save the squirrel who is red

After the success of Save A Meadow (the meadow was SAVED! All right, they never used my song for anything, but STILL) John The Publisher got in touch to see if I might like to write a song about Red Squirrels, to enter a competition to get it into a film. I wrote one version of this song which John thought was a bit rubbish, so I went back and re-did it like THIS. The idea was to be a song you could sing along to easily, so there's less WORDS, and thus less JAZZ PHRASING, than usual.

We entered the competition and heard nothing, so assumed we hadn't win, but then months - possibly YEARS - later we discovered that it HAD been used in a film. I've no idea how it was used, or where, or if that means that there is a BOOK TOKEN somewhere with my name in it, but I'm pretty sure this means I have SAVED Red Squirrels. I wonder if they hang around much in meadows?
